Allotments in Cardiff

Grow your own

Growing food locally is one way we can all help to reduce our carbon footprint – you can’t beat the taste of fresh produce, especially if you have grown it yourself!  Allotment keeping is a great way to keep fit, enjoy the fresh air, make friends, and grow your own favourite fruit and vegetables.  If you’ve got room, you can even grow flowers for cutting!

Applying for a plot

You must be a Cardiff resident to apply for a plot at one of our 28 allotment sites and you can register for a maximum of 2 sites.

You must be on the waiting list to be offered a plot.

Allotments are very popular but waiting lists vary from site to site. If the number of people on a waiting list is more than half of the available plots at the site, we close the waiting list until the list goes down.

Allotment plots vary in size and cost. The site representative will let you know about the options once you have been invited to see the site.

  • Once you have registered your interest for your two chosen allotment sites, you will be added to the waiting list.
  • When a plot becomes available to you, the site representative will invite you to the site to see the plot and what facilities there are on site.
  • If you decide to take on a plot you will need to sign a tenancy agreement form and pay a refundable deposit between £10 and £20 for a gate key. We will then send you an invoice for the plot.
  • The allotment year starts on 2 February and rent is payable for the full year.  If you take on the plot between 1 December and 1 February the following year a pro rata amount is payable.
  • Please note you must cultivate at least one third of your plot within the first three months and the whole of your plot within twelve months.
  • If you decide not to take on a plot, or if the site representative is unable to contact you, your details will be removed from the waiting list.

    Help keep Cardiff tidy

Carpet, tyres, PVC windows and doors, asbestos sheeting and household waste are restricted items and should not be brought onto any allotment sites. You can get rid of these items at a recycling centre.

    Crop success or failure survey

Please help us understand how your plot is doing, what crops were a success and what failed.

Climate change can have significant impacts on allotment gardening, and crop failures being influenced by various factors associated with this. The purpose of this survey is to document the persistent influence of climate change, growing conditions, and the overall progress of the allotment gardening. In turn this will help to enhance our understanding of the influence of climate change on our allotment holder’s yield.

For the council to be able to analyse the results effectively, please complete the survey by the 31/12/2024
