Project achievements to date

Since November 2021, the project has planted around 80,000 new trees in 300 sites across Cardiff. This includes:

  • 8 hectares of new woodland areas,
  • 3 hectares of new hedgerows, and
  • nearly 1,000 fruit trees.

The sites include:

  • 162 parks and open spaces,
  • 40 street verges,
  • 37 schools, nurseries or university settings,
  • 2 farms, and
  • 15 other community spaces like scout halls, churches, allotments and Hubs.

There were 2,500 volunteers involved in the 2023 to 2024 planting season.

Our volunteers have contributed over 11,000 hours since the start of the programme in 2021.

Many families volunteer together, while a lot of our other volunteers come from:

  • corporate groups,
  • schools, or
  • community groups.

They have all played an important role in:

  • planting and monitoring trees across Cardiff, and
  • looking after our tree nursery at Forest Farm.

In line with UK averages, the average success rate of new planting across Cardiff is 82%. Around 40% of sites have a 100% success rate.

The project’s network of ‘Tree Guardians’ helps monitor site health and report losses of new trees, which can be due to:

  • seasonal factors,
  • disease, or
  • vandalism.

Where there have been losses in new tree areas, the project will replace these or change an approach. This could mean choosing another species to plant. This helps to make sure trees stand the best chance of establishment.

Coed Caerdydd has also organised over 30 training events based on:

  • tree identification,
  • orchard pruning, and
  • the Woodland Trust’s Ancient Tree Inventory.
